Statewide Productions of "The Nutcracker"

Dancers will bring a modern interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” to Ball State’s Emens Auditorium stage.


The performance, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8, is part of the university’s newest collaboration between the Department

of Theatre and Dance and School of Music.


Dancers will give a modern twist to the classic ballet story of Clara, the Mouse King and the Nutcracker Prince while the Ball State Symphony Orchestra will provide the music.

All tickets cost $10.


For those who can’t make it to the Ball State performance but don’t want to miss out on a holiday classic, here’s a quick look at some other Indiana Nutcracker performances:


Muncie Ballet Performance

Performers from Muncie Ballet will put on a version of “The Nutcracker” at 9:30 a.m., Dec. 13, at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. Tickets cost $5.


Fort Wayne Ballet Performance

The Fort Wayne Ballet will perform several classical renditions of “The Nutcracker” throughout late November and early December.

All tickets are $8, and matinee performances are accompanied by special “Sugar Plum Parties” after the main show. These parties include partaking in holiday treats and photo opportunities alongside the dancers.

2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1

Sunday, Dec. 2: 2:30 p.m.*

Thursday, Dec. 6: 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 8: 2:30 p.m.* and 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 9: 2:30 p.m.

*Includes Sugar Plum Party following the performance

Indiana Ballet Conservatory’s performance of “The Nutcracker” will be at Newfields The Toby Theatre, in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, from December 13th to 16th at 7:30 p.m

“The Nutcracker” tells the tale of a young girl and her beloved Nutcracker as she battles evil and learns the value and residency of the human spirit. This version is the closest to the original version of the story that debuted over 100 years ago in Russia.

Acclaimed principal dancer with Boston Ballet, Lasha Khozashvili, will perform a special holiday dance at the performance.


INDY

The Nutcracker is one of the most popular Christmas ballets, and makes for a fun family outing. This holiday season, Indianapolis offers several opportunities to see the show that are suitable for children of all ages.

Zionsville Performing Arts Center is hosting a production of the ballet on Dec. 15 and 16. Afternoon and evening options are available. Performed by the Central Indiana Dance Ensemble, this performance also features the Sugar Plum Fairy Dessert Party for an additional fee. This is an outing sure to get any Scrooge in the mood for the holidays,

If you’re looking for something to do Christmas Eve, the Moscow Ballet is bringing their version of the show to the Murat Theatre in downtown Indy. A bit pricier, this event makes for a perfect date night with a significant other.

For those who are looking for a fully staged production, Butler University is holding performances in Clowes Memorial Hall the weekend after Thanksgiving. The show features daring pyrotechnics, something sure to delight any audience member.

A more modern version of the holiday classic will be presented by the Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre Troupe at Pike Performing Arts Center. The story has a twist that no other production has, portraying Klara as a homeless orphan who learns the true meaning of the season.

Shorter versions of the show are also options for families with smaller children. The Monon Center in Carmel is performing excerpts of the show Dec. 2.

The Hussey-Mayfield Public Library in downtown Zionsville will perform the show and offer pictures and dancing with the characters right after, making this session perfect for young kids who are enchanted by the story.

The Nutcracker is truly a show for all ages, and Indianapolis offers no shortage of opportunities to catch this holiday classic.
