What to see at the First Thursday Gallery Walk

Explore the community’s creative side Thursday as Downtown Muncie and Ball State University kick off their First Thursday monthly gallery walk. The event will be from 5-8 p.m. downtown and on campus.

The Atrium Gallery

What: “Hannah Barnes & Ted Neal: Sabbatical Exhibitions”

Where: First floor of the Arts and Journalism Building, Ball State University

When: First Thursday hours from 5-8 p.m.

A two-person exhibition of artwork by Hannah Barnes, associate professor of art and painting and Ted Neal professor of art and ceramics, will be showcased from Tuesday to Nov. 29.

Barnes creates work that draws on abstract forms and tropes to explore the nature of meaning within abstraction, according to a press release. Her work in painting, drawing and installation engages ideas such as perception, illusion, impermanence and the indeterminacy of images.

“In all of my work, one constant is my use of the vessel as a framework upon which to hang concepts of utility and self-expression,” Neal said in a press release. “Specifically, my utilitarian work is most satisfactory when a single object occupies space as both a useful object and one that also embodies loftier ideas such as beauty, connectedness and shared kinesthetic experiences.”


Book Arts Collaborative

Where: Madjax, 514 E. Jackson St.

What: Book Arts Collaborative and Tribune Showprint will be open for shop tours.


The Brinkman Gallery

Where: 409 S. Walnut St.

Brinkman Gallery will be featuring "Waterscapes" by artist, Kevin Campbell, a Ball State alumnus. The painter’s work appears photorealistic at a distance, but as you approach, the pattern of the waves begins to break down into abstract forms and shapes, according to a press release. Thursday’s gallery includes a meet and greet with Campbell, as well as free refreshments for guests.


Cornerstone Center for the Arts

What: “Studies in Isolation: An Art Exhibition by Shannon Mehaffey”

Where: Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery, 520 E. Main St.

When: First Thursday hours from 5-7 p.m.

Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts for the opening reception of “Studies in Isolation,” an art exhibition by Shannon Mehaffey. The exhibit features a mixed media series of paintings depicting derelict and vacant landscapes including abandoned buildings, factories, blight and power lines, which all serve as metaphors, according to a press release.

Mehaffey is an artist and educator living and working in Muncie. She teaches watercolor painting and mixed media arts to adults and youth at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.

Studies in Isolation” will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of November.


The Fickle Peach

What: Robby Tompkins, “Take a Moment”

Where: 117 E. Charles St.

A photographic art show featuring DWNTWN Muncie sunsets will be on display at The Fickle Peach throughout the month of November. Robby Tompkins’ “Take A Moment” features 25 sunset photos taken from the same downtown Muncie location.


Gindhart (at Madjax)

What: “1992 Was the Year of the American Indian”

Where: Madjax, 514 E. Jackson St.

When: First Thursday hours from 5-8 p.m.

Debra Gindhart will celebrate Native American Heritage Month with an assemblage art series "Native American Indian Genocide," according to a press release. Gindhart’s art reflects history in vibrant colors and mixed media.

Thursday’s event includes a meet and greet with Gindhart, as well as free refreshments for guests.


Gordy Fine Arts & Framing Co.

What: “Holiday Showcase”

Where: 224 E. Main St.

When: First Thursday hours from 5-8 p.m.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company is opening its annual Holiday Showcase featuring work by Muncie’s Book Arts Collaborative.

During the event representatives will be on hand from Book Arts Collaborative, a letterpress shop and book publisher managed by Ball State immersive learning students, according to a press release. The class will give a special presentation of their work at 6:15 p.m. and will discuss their products such as hand-sewn journals, coasters and greeting cards.

In addition to items from Book Arts Collaborative, the showcase will have drawings, jewelry and pottery on sale from local artists. Prices range from $1 to $2,000.


The Guardians Brewing Company (at Madjax)

Where: 514 E. Jackson St.

The Guardian Brewing Company will showcase the diverse collection from Tribune Showprints.


Madjax Muncie

What: “Plywood Chairs + Simple Toolboxes”

Where: 515 E. Main St.

Architecture students from the College of Architecture and Planning designed and constructed a couple of simple wood chairs and toolboxes that will be on display for purchase.


Muncie Makers Market

Where: Corner of Walnut and Adams streets

When: First Thursday hours from 5-8 p.m.

The Muncie Makers Market will feature fresh homemade food, locally-grown fruit and vegetables, fresh and dried herbs, live plants, art and handmade crafts of all kinds, according to a press release.


Muncie Makes Lab

What: “The Figurative Element: Drawings from Life” and “Design is a tool of action. Architecture is a verb.”

Where: 628 S. Walnut St.

When: First Thursday hours from 5-8 p.m.

Muncie Makes Lab will feature two exhibits: “The Figurative Element: Drawings from Life” and “Design is a tool of action. Architecture is a verb.”

“The Figurative Element: Drawings from Life,” located on the first floor, includes a group of drawings made by Ball State students, alumni and faculty. The art in the exhibition “are drawn from life,” according to a press release.

“Design is a tool of action. Architecture is a verb,” located on the second floor, is an installation by Ana de Brea, in collaboration with Taylor Henderson and Jesse Lindenfeld.
