2 seasonal treats to try before Halloween

While coffee shops everywhere are rolling out their Pumpkin Spice Lattes, there are a variety of holiday snacks that often get overlooked.

As the weather gets cold, it is prime season to snuggle up in your favorite sweater and try out some seasonal snacks.

If you’re not a huge baker, not to worry — here are two seasonal snacks that are easy to make and are sure to impress:

Pumpkin Sugar Cookies

This is a great recipe for people who want to get in the Halloween spirit but aren’t crazy about pumpkin flavors.

It is a fairly cheap recipe because you can mostly use ingredients that are lying around your house.

The process is fairly uninvolved so even the most novice bakers can turn out a good product.

With its thin bake and low rise, the final cookie can almost be compared to a Vanilla Wafer with a hint of pumpkin taste. They have a crunch but dissolve nicely in your mouth.

With its light pumpkin flavor and easy bake, these cookies can be made throughout Thanksgiving.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup of sugar, with a little extra for rolling

2 ½ cups of flour

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon cinnamon

14 tablespoon butter

2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 egg yolk

½ cup 100 percent pure pumpkin puree

Recipe:

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon and set aside.

With your mixer on medium, mix together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in egg yolk, vanilla and pumpkin until well combined.

Slowly mix in flour mixture until well combined.

Refrigerate cookie dough for 20 minutes.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls in the sugar.

Place on baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

Halloween Trail Mix

This easy mix only requires three ingredients: candy corn, honey roasted peanuts and M&Ms, which can all be bought for under $5.

Preparation is easy — all you have to do is empty all the containers into a bowl and eat up.

The snack is good for group settings, but you may need to bring the hand sanitizer. While it may not steal the show, it is something guests will sure to keep coming back for.

The golden ratio is four peanuts, one candy corn and two M&Ms, though it is tasty with just a handful, too.

The snack, while tasty individually, mixes together well, giving off a candy bar flavor.
